Sarasota is one of the most dog friendly cities in the country. Warm Weather, lots of park space, and local organizations the cater toward furry family members are just a few things that make Sarasota such a wonderful place for pets.

We are often touched by the efforts the local businesses make to not only cater toward pets, but also promote animal safety and welfare. This week, we are highlighting the Humane Society of Sarasota County and their new sensory garden to help pets find their forever homes faster.

Great shelters are all about helping pets make great transitions

One of the biggest challenges for animal shelters is convincing families that and adoption will be a blessing, and not a curse. To that end, the Humane Society of Sarasota County just unveiled a new Sensory Garden that will help animals both transition to and out of life at the shelter.

“By activating all of a dog’s senses – touch, smell, sight, sound and taste – the sensory garden is designed to reduce stress and help them relax in their new surroundings,” explains Humane Society Executive Director, Anna Gonce.

In doing so, dogs are less likely to develop kennel stress and exhibit temporary behaviors that could prevent adoption. Of course, all of the flowers, bridges, dirt piles, and fountains dramatically enhance quality of life while at the shelter as well.

The Humane Society of Sarasota recognizes T. Ralph Taylor, Jr, local businesses, individuals, and volunteers for their long time support. Through the community’s time and generous donations, projects like this are made possible.

“We are incredibly grateful to Mr. Taylor, and the support of many local businesses, individuals and volunteers, including gifts in kind, for bringing this dream to fruition: this garden will enrich the lives of our animals with a 360-degree approach to animal behavior and welfare. We look for innovative ways to encourage natural behaviors that give our dogs constructive outlets for their anxious energy,” said Gonce.

“A sensory garden is one of the best ways to ensure our dogs are getting all of the mental and physical stimulation they need to live a happy, healthy life. This will change the lives of dogs that come into our care and better prepare them for finding their loving, forever homes.”
