The tip of Snead Island is home to Emerson Preserve, a 365 acres preserve at the mouth of the intersection of Manatee River and Tampa Bay. Emerson Preserve welcomes Snead residents and visitors to explore the wildlife, as well as the prehistoric and historic sites.

In the 1870s, Snead Island was a thriving farming community, separated from the mainland by shallow mudflat covered in mangroves and oysters. By 1900, a channel was completed which saved streamers hours of run time. A deep-water dock was constructed shortly after which became an essential part of commerce in the area. Once connected to the mainland by only a private swing bridge, Snead Island meets the outside world with a small bridge.
